Before the Shower of Sparks

The story is about a hypothetical or alternate future where clouds have covered the sun. As the world begins to deteriorate over the course of centuries, oil rigs spill into the ocean, covering the water with inches of oil. The humans who still live must adapt to live in a world without light, and so retreat into caves, and invent new ways of collecting food and staying alive. The oil-covered ocean becomes an invaluable source of fuel, which keeps the people living in the caves warm, and allows them to cook whatever food they can scavenge. In the climax of the story, a chance accident causes the oil on the ocean to catch fire, which burns away the clouds, and brings back the light of the sun. Humanity is forced to confront their new surroundings, and once again adapt to a new way of life. Text written by Sasha Blakeley.
